Will the copper turn green over time?
If you choose a natural metal (copper, brass, zinc), then the metal will change over time; however, if you select one of our Premium finishes, if applicable, we will seal the metal to help prevent further changes. The formation of patina on copper is similar to the formation of rust on iron. Both happen when oxygen in the air interacts with the metal atoms in the presence of water.
Do your copper products stop patina?
Most of our products are sealed to stop further patina. Some of our product finishes do feature living or natural patinas that will continue to change. Check the particular product page before purchasing for the most accurate information.
What is patina?
We utilize the term "patina" to describe our color options. Patina can be more commonly be defined as a gloss or sheen on a surface resulting from age or polishing. Patina is also a term used to describe a green or brown film on the surface of copper or similar metals produced by oxidation over a long period.
What Sealant Do You Use?
We have experimented with many products for protecting copper, and have selected our sealant for many reasons. It binds well to copper. It dries quickly and cures to a resistant hardness. Its appearance, over copper, is excellent. This lacquer is resistant to normal types of stains from foods encountered in restaurants and homes and protects your copper patina.
We have also experimented with the stains that are encountered most often. The types of foods that can most quickly affect a copper patina, if it is unprotected, are acidic foods such as catsup and lemon juice. Even these foods will not cause patina changes if they are wiped up in a timely manner. Copper (and its protective lacquer) can also be scratched by other metals, scouring pads, or abrasive cleaners.
